One of those myriad laryn-Jerry-January shows that has some pleasant 2nd set surprises - Jer’s out vocally, but we know he’d just as soon be the egoless guitar man off to the side as sing lead...that Playin’ rips; it actually clocks in over 22 min....

What a second set!
Never been a fan of Donna but she really stepped up in Jerry's absence in the second set. Unfortunately Jerry's voice never really sounded the same after this show.

Truckin is insane.
11/6/77 might be slightly better for the period, but not by much. 5 stars for this balls-to-the-wall Truckin!

OUTSTANDING!
Even though Jerry's voice is totally shot....hence the Weir Dominated second set song selection, this show rocks. Second set is smokin hot, and TRUCKIN is unbelievable.

Best Show
I like this show, but the reason the setlist is the way it is, is because Jerry was sick. They picked bobby songs for a reason.

One of the best shows I've ever heard...
I can't believe this show hasn't gotten better / more reviews. I don't believe I've EVER heard a show this good. If Jerry's voice had been better I'd have to give this show fifty stars, but I suppose I'll have to settle for 5.
First set is a county-Dead lover's dream! Big River > Mama Tried are excellent as well as Loser, in which it's becomes evident that Jerry is having problems with his voice. Looks Like Rain is great, and Tennessee Jed, while lacking vocally, is a pretty tight version musically. Minglewood rocks as usual, and we are treated to a very jazzy Lazy Lightnin' > Supplication that really goes places.
Second set is a BEAST! Incredible 17+ minute PITB into a 17-plus minute Estimated, linked by a tremendous jam that I really got lost in. A nice Drums that you can tell almost immediately where its going, which is, of course a crushing The Other One. Truckin' is FEROCIOUS!!!
Can't believe this show doesn't get more love. It's definitely in my top five right now. You owe it to yourself to give it a listen. Usually takes me a while to give a whole show a good listen, catching the first set here, part of the second there, and finishing up when I can, but I just couldn't stop this one. Stayed up way too late to finish it (got to work at 6 A.M. tomorrow) but it was WELL worth it!!!

truckin!!!!
This show contains one of the most ferocious Truckin's of all time; maybe only rivaled by 11/6/77. It goes on and on...building and building, then just EXPLODES. Typical 78' fanning and high energy from Jerry. But that's just one song...the rest of the show is only par at best. That is how many 78' shows are. And by the way, Donna's lest show wasn't till Feburary of 1979, over a year later.

I love the last half of the second set this show, Estimated-TOO is sick. Jerry's voice adds to the whole vibe of this show. Definitely a unique feel. Not a soul melting experience, but worth a listen. It's a fun show.
Would have given it a four except Bobby's joke was less than hilarious.

a good one
this is a good show from a very underrated month of GD....jan. 78. Lazy>supp. is a really good version as stated, but i think the real kicker is the other one>truckin'. dispite a small flip durin the first verse this other one is just on fire, jerry really goes aggresive toward the middle of he jam, more so than he would normaly. Then the segue into truckin' is done very well and the truckin itself is a real smoker. an inversion of the usual Truckin'>Other one segues. Cant give this show 5 stars because jerry doesnt sing much ( or very well), but will stand behind a very solid 4 stars....check out 1/31 in Chicago for another over looked show in this great month of GD!

Good Opening to a Great Year
Had to get in here and plug in my four stars. Can't believe this one's getting no love...
LL>S is well done, lots of energy and Jerry nails the interior jam.
The main Playin jam kind of meanders with Jerry noodling away over a very repetitious chug from the rest of the fellas. Keith rescues this one with help from Phil and they're able to aim the bus into a great Estimated entry jam.
The Other One and the Truckin are the other highlights. Jerry drops many Truckin riffs during the first post-verse jam of TOO, letting the boys know where this one's headed. Donna really growls in the last bit of TOO and it sounds really good!
4 stars for the show, and a very listenable source!

The Boys look forward to San Bernadino
nice show but as far as the best in jan. I like the San Diego,Shrine and McArthur Ct. shows the most and aside Jerry's vocals they all sound real sweet. The first tour of the year in '78 was killer.

My 5th show Jerry very sick !
Short and dull. If you think this is good wait till you hear 2 shows later in San Diego, Yes Jerry was still not singing at all, at that one but what a guitar backup of all Bob tunes !

Good Start to 1978
Im kind of surprised no one has reviewed this one. Its pretty good. The production could have used little more bass end and some less high end on the final mix. But its allot better than other shows in the same time frame. I always judge a show by the length of certain songs, Dark Star, Terrapin Station, and Playing. This helps me gauge the nature of the bands experimental mood that day. I really like what the guys did to Estimated Prophet, a very jazzy prelude (~5min.) into the main lyrics. Many cuts are very fluid and have some interesting dynamics. The creativity defiantly is demonstrated at this show. I have seen a few shows prior to 1978 but this was the year I signed up for a long strange trip. For me it happened at the ROCKS in July and August 1978.
